A visit to the dentist is sometimes associated with pain and leads to varying levels of anxiety. At Smile Explorers Pediatric Dentistry, we want every child to feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed during treatment. We strive to create a pleasant experience to help your child build positive associations with the dentist. We proudly offer pediatric sedation dentistry options, including general anesthesia, for your child’s safety and comfort. You and your child will be in excellent hands!
General anesthesia induces a state of deep sleep, and your child’s reflexes will be completely relaxed. At Smile Explorers Pediatric Dentistry, we tailor each treatment plan to the unique needs of our patients. We may recommend general anesthesia to keep your child safe and comfortable while receiving outstanding dental care. Your child will have no recollection of the procedure, no matter how complicated it may have been.
Before the dental procedure, a pediatric anesthesiologist, a doctor specializing in anesthesia for children, will give your child medications that will help your child fall asleep. Our pediatric anesthesiologist will care for your child throughout the procedure, while our skilled dentist cares for your child’s smile.
We may recommend general anesthesia in the following situations:
Once we determine that your child is a candidate for general anesthesia, we will provide you with specific instructions.
Before the procedure:
You must ensure your child refrains from eating and drinking for a specific number of hours before the procedure, as recommended by our pediatric anesthesiologist.
During the procedure:
You or your child may be anxious before general anesthesia, and that’s to be expected. It’s important to stay calm and reassuring because your child will feed off your energy. It’s always helpful to bring a comfort item, such as a favorite stuffed animal or a small blanket. Our experienced pediatric anesthesiologist will monitor your little one’s vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure a safe and positive experience.
After the procedure:
Once we complete the procedure, we will take your child to our recovery room. We will continue monitoring the vital signs until your child is fully awake. The effects of anesthesia may last for the remainder of the day, so make sure your little one gets plenty of rest.
