7 Essential Oral Health Tips for Kids | World Oral Health Day

Keep Your Child’s Smile Bright & Healthy
World Oral Health Day kinda sneaks up every year, but it’s the perfect little reminder to check in on your kid’s dental habits. At Smile Explorers Pediatric Dentistry in Glendale, AZ, we see tons of kiddos every week, and honestly — the small everyday things make the biggest difference. Here’s a simple, real-life list of stuff that actually helps.
1. Start early (like… really early)
Before that first tiny tooth even shows up, just gently wipe your baby’s gums. Once the tooth pops out, switch to a soft baby toothbrush + a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. Twice a day is the goal (even if they try to wiggle out of it lol).
2. Brush + floss every day
Kids should brush 2x a day for a full 2 minutes. And once their teeth start touching each other, add flossing — it gets everything the brush can’t reach.
3. Stick to tooth-friendly snacks
Try keeping fruits, veggies, cheese, yogurt, nuts, etc. handy. Sugary snacks, sticky candies, juice boxes… all that stuff is fine once in a while but not everyday. (Cavities love sugar a little too much.)
4. Regular dentist visits matter
A check-up every 6 months helps catch little problems before they turn into big ones. First visit should be by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth.
5. Water > sugary drinks
Encourage water through the day. Fluoridated water is a huge bonus — it helps strengthen enamel and rinse away food bits and bacteria.
6. Mouthguards for sports (seriously!)
If your kiddo plays sports, a mouthguard can save you from a whole broken-tooth situation. Easy to wear, protects a lot.
7. Make oral care fun
Kids do so much better when brushing doesn’t feel like a chore. Use a song, a timer, a fun app, little rewards — whatever gets them excited and keeps the routine going.
